DANCE: Hip Hop Foundational Movement

Students will be immersed in a unique learning experience, the diaspora of which includes Breakin', which is the original form of Hip Hop Dance. Hip Hop teaches inclusion and diversity, drawing from all forms of movement. It comes from the youth, teaches respect for the elders and therefore bridges the generation gap. Here, everyone belongs and is acknowledged with the same universal respect. All bodies, all ages, all people.

HOW

Through the form of Hip Hop, dancers will be introduced to the four elements of dance; Body, Energy, Space, and Time which are present throughout all dance forms. They will learn how to express themselves through movement, both choreographed and improvised, through guided instruction as well as with their own ideas and creations. Students will understand this to be a form of storytelling as well as a form of social protest/commentary as they simultaneously define and refine their self-expression. Hip Hop teaches discipline, strength, inclusion, cultural connections, history, respect, and performance goals. Hip Hop draws from all forms.

WHY

Through their experience, dancers will learn self-discipline, self-empowerment, and how to work as a community towards a greater goal. They will grow in confidence and skill as well as knowledge of self. Hip Hop teaches pride in bettering oneself, one’s community, and how we can positively affect the larger world around us. "Each one, teach one." We lift up others as we, ourselves, rise. Hip Hop is for EVERYONE. Hip Hop is THE language of the youth and THE way of the future. Hip Hop has the power to unite people and to heal the world.
